Help Desk: The Secret of the Raptor Revealed! (How to Open it)

Text and images are work of Arcticwolf.

The Raptor's mechanism is a hidden one, meaning this new age knife employs a concealed opening/closing system which is very difficult to figure out. There are no buttons, levers, or any other obvious ways to release the blade. Here is the way to operate the Raptor knife:

a) Hold the Raptor in your right hand, with your thumb and fingers out of the blade's way to allow it to swing open. If this is done correctly, the part of the closed knife which contains the blade should be pointing left, and your thumb should be resting on top of the handle side facing you.

Note: This knife may also be used by left-handed people. Once you have figured out how to open this knife with your right hand, it will be easy to figure out how with your left hand.

b) Here's the tricky part: to understand how this knife's hidden 'scale release' mechanism works, take a moment to turn the knife in ytour right hand so that you are looking right at the spine (the back) of the knife, this time without either side of the handle facing you. The following instructions also require the knife to be held in your right hand as in 'a)'

There are three parts to the knife when viewed in this fashion:

  • The Top Scale: The side of the handle which faces you when holding the knife as shown in 'a)'
  • The Blade: When closed, the blade seperates the Top Handle from the Bottom Handle.
  • The Bottom Scale: When held as in 'a)', your fingers are against this; your thumb is against the Top Scale.

c) Holding the knife in your right hand as shown in 'a)', rest your thumb against the SIDE of the Top Scale at the top of the knife. The Top Scale moves sideways to open the knife: with your thumb, push the Top Scale towards the back of your hand. When the blade snaps open, stop pushing sideways on the Top Scale.

d) The blade is now locked open. To close the Raptor, simply push on the Top Scale in exactly the same way, and push the blade closed with your left hand.
